PR Tips for the Start-Up: How to Get the Word out on Your New Company

    By Maria Murnane

You have a great product, but no one knows what it is. You have a great Web site, but no one knows that it’s there. You have some happy customers, but no one knows who they are.

    What do you do?

If you’re smart, you’ll implement a focused, strategic public relations campaign to start building some awareness about your company. It’s not hard;and it’s not expensive. If you can work it into your budget, hiring an agency is probably the best option. If not, here are basics to get you started on your own:

    1) Develop a target media list

Think about where you want to be. What magazines (print and online) do your potential customers read? What do potential business partners read? To what TV/radio shows do they tune in? Write these down in order of importance. Then call each organization and get the contact information for the person who would be most interested in your product. Set up a mailing list for product reviews, and develop a quick e-mail list for sending out company announcements.

    2) Create some basic press materials

Once you generate media interest in your company, you must be prepared to send out some information immediately, either in paper form or electronically. Put together a folder with some basic information explaining who you are and what you do. Most press kits include press releases, company backgrounders, bios and headshots of the executives, products shots, etc. (Note;high school yearbook photos are not recommended.)

Keep the writing short, and leave out the technical jargon. Write your materials as if the person reading them were not familiar with your industry. While your initial point of contact maybe be tech-savvy, you never know who might eventually be assigned to write something about your company;don’t assume he or she has a degree in engineering or computer science or Web design.

Put all press material on your Web site for easy access.

    3) Leverage the power of search engines

Register your Web site with all major search engines to drive traffic to your site (e.g. Yahoo!, Lycos, Excite). Develop an extensive list of key words that have to do with your business and enter all of them.

    4) Conduct editorial research

Most magazines plan their coverage a year ahead of time, so call each publication on your target list and ask them to send you an editorial calendar. Many of these are also available online at each magazine’s Web site. Look through the calendars and see if any of the scheduled articles have anything to do with your business. If so, contact the editor in charge of the story and tell him/her why your company would be a good fit for the article.

    5) Befriend freelancers

Freelancers can be a PR person’s best friend. They are always looking for good story ideas, and they have solid relationships with multiple publications. Identify freelancers in your area who write for your target publications, and invite them out to lunch. If they don’t live near you, call them up and strike up a conversation. E-mail them jokes. If they’re good at what they do they’ll be happy to hear from you and will listen to what you have to say. Freelancers know the editors and will pitch your features ideas directly to them, which is much nicer than having to cold-call the editors yourself.

    6) Go on a press/analyst tour

Most industry journalists and analysts will be willing to meet with you to hear about your business because it’s their job to know what’s going on in the industry they cover. And if you’re willing to fly across the country to see them, they can usually find a half-hour in their schedule for the meeting. Make a few calls and set up some appointments;it’s not as hard as it sounds. You might not get immediate coverage as a result, but you’ll develop relationships that will benefit you over time.

    7) Attend key industry trade shows

Even if you can’t afford a booth, be sure to attend your industry’s top trade show(s). Most of the journalists on your media list will probably be there. Call them ahead of time and invite them for a drink while at the show. Ask them their opinions on the state of the industry and how your company fits into it. Just like a press tour, this type of contact will help you develop solid relationships that are critical for an effective PR program. Your presence will help the media begin to see you as a credible player in the industry and pay more attention to any announcements you make.

    8) Document your customer success stories

Do your customers love your product? Are they happy with your service? Get them to say so on the record. The press loves to interview satisfied customers, and you’d be surprised at how many companies don’t have any customer names on hand to offer reporters. Keep an updated list of customers for the media to contact.

    9) Position yourself as an industry expert

If you want people to think you’re a leader in your industry, get out there and lead. Submit interesting articles to your target publications about the future of your industry (and put color reprint of any articles you author in your press kit). Offer to speak at key trade shows and conferences. Participate in roundtable panels and industry events. Write letters to the editor of your target publications commenting on previous articles. Establish a presence in the industry by contributing unique opinions and an expertise that is valued by your peers and the media.

Following these basic steps won’t get you a feature story in USA Today , but it will probably generate a lot more results than you’d get blowing your entire marketing budget on paid advertising. If you’re focused about what you want to accomplish, a home-grown PR plan can get you rolling down the road toward early retirement.

  • GM(Genetically Modified), Monsanto, B&M, Y2K,… (1999)

    GM(Genetically Modified), Monsanto, B&M, Y2K,…

    **********************************************************************

The Twelve Dimensions of Strategic Internal Communication

    1. Strategic Orientation and Imperative

Communication is an organization’s lifeblood. The fundamental purpose of communication in an organization is to enable and energize employees to carry out its strategic intent. Organizations need the capability to rapidly identify, send, receive, and understand strategic information that is credible, sensible, and relevant. But successfully executing a strategy, or bringing about operational or cultural change, or achieving stretch or breakthrough goals requires something more: the broad awareness, understanding and acceptance of strategic intent by people as a foundation to their commitment. Decisions on strategy and policy must take into account the imperative and the challenge of communication, and the tools and talent of the communication function must be oriented to the organization’s strategic priorities.

    2. Integrity and Integration

Communication must, above all else, be credible. The cornerstone of credibility is integrity; the foundation of integrity is constant and complete consistency between communication and conduct. The challenge of building credibility is the work of integrating an organization’s formal, semi-formal, and informal voices. The rhetoric by which an organization manages its affairs and presents itself to others is manifestly important, but its impact as communication is never equal to or greater than that of the organization’s decisions and actions. For through such decisions and actions, an organization continually tests and defines itself.

    3. Dignity and Respect

Communication thrives on mutual dignity and respect; together, these are the fundamental building blocks for relationships of trust and accountability. Organizations that are blessed by such relationships will, over time, develop greater internal commitment and thus outperform and surpass organizations that are not. An organization’s success ultimately depends on the fully aligned, discretionary, principled, and inspired effort of its people. Communication characterized by mutual dignity and respect, because it builds relationships of trust and accountability among people, is foundational to such effort and therefore to the success of the organization.

    4. Flow of Strategic Information

Information is the currency of communication. Just as the flow of money creates wealth, so the rapid and steady flow of strategic information enriches and empowers an organization. Organizations must nurture and sustain the systematic flow of credible, sensible, timely, and relevant information – up, down, and across their structure – so as to bring all their resources to bear on the execution of their strategic intent. That requires the full commitment of leadership, the application of appropriate technology, and the broad participation and support of employees. The upward flow of information is critical; leadership’s receptivity to upward thrusts of negative information, especially, is a reflection of the trust it holds in people. For better or worse, the flow of strategic information through an organization is a barometer of its ability to compete.

    5. Clarity and Power of Messages

Clarity is a hallmark of excellent communication. Its absence leads to confusion, complacency, even chaos. Clear and powerful messages are, first and foremost, carefully considered, so they do not conflict with other messages. Though often repeated, they are few in number. Clear and powerful messages strike a balance between simplicity and complexity; they are expressed with an economy of words but a wealth of meaning. Their language is the language of ordinary people in everyday conversation. Because clear messages address the concerns and needs of listeners, they naturally take the form of a conversation more than a lecture or announcement. Finally, clear and powerful messages are coherent, consistent, and complete; they acknowledge their own limits, they explain their rationale, and they speak to whatever questions they have raised.

    6. External Perspective

An organization’s internal communication systems require an external perspective and orientation. Strategy, of course, is the means by which an organization copes with its external environment – its customers, competitors, and suppliers, as well as the communities and governments where it operates. Individuals and teams in an organization seeking to implement a strategy must understand not only the strategy itself but also the reasons for it and the measures of its success. Only a communication system anchored in the company’s external environment can provide that information in a compelling way and place it in a tenable context. The external orientation may include the arenas of public policy and philanthropy; in its totality, information with an external bearing must be balanced, strategic, and truthful.

    7. Roles and Responsibilities

A high-performance system of communication depends on the timely, energetic, capable participation of employees throughout an organization. Each employee has a role in communication; some have multiple roles. All employees should have clearly defined responsibilities for vertical (upward and downward) and for lateral communication appropriate to their position. These responsibilities should explicitly address both receiving and sending information as well as building relationships conducive to rapid, credible, strategic communication. Responsibilities should specify what information ought to be communicated, to whom, when, how and why. Accountabilities should include the real consequences of fulfiling or not fulfiling these responsibilities. A healthy communication environment should encourage and reward employees for active communication within the organization regardless of the information or message they communicate.

    8. Listening and Visible Presence

Listening is the fiber of good communication. The best communication resembles not so much an eloquent announcement or persuasive admonition as it does a balanced conversation and robust discussion. There can be no communication without listening, and there can be no listening without genuine receptivity and a real inclination to act in response to whatever information or message is being communicated. Good listening is more than polite silence and attention when others speak, and it’s altogether different from manipulative tactics masquerading as skill. It is rather a high virtue, a value, a reflection of bedrock belief that learning what other people have on their mind is a wise investment of one’s time. It requires intellectual humility and the willingness to learn from people at all stations of life. Through visible presence, one not only learns by listening but also establishes a welcoming rapport that builds relationships of respect and dignity, conducive to frequent, candid and rapid communication.

    9. Training and Support

Recognizing each employee’s vital role in communication, organizations must ensure that all employees have the capability, the tools, and the support to fulfil their responsibilities. Suitable education and training will depend on the nature of the industry and the particular needs of the individual and the organization; in any case it will furnish the capability for busy people to communicate competently and comfortably. Appropriate and adequate tools will include both the technology and the resources for regular communication. Support for communication will include a stream of strategic information, time on the clock, channels of upward communication, and the physical facilities conducive to good communication; above all, it must include simple respect and the presumption of good faith, so as not to “shoot the messenger for the message”; Without this foundation, an organization cannot realistically expect people to communicate with the timeliness, clarity, and credibility that are essential.

    10. Structure and Process

The structure and process of internal communication should reflect the fact that communication is a means, not an end, to success. The fundamental purpose of workplace communication is to enhance the business performance of the organization. Communication succeeds only to the extent that it enables and energizes employees to align their work with the organization’s strategic intent. A preoccupation with artistry or diction may divert attention away from the business issues at hand. The responsibility and tools for strategic communication should be distributed throughout the organization, so that each employee is an integral part of the process. The communication function should build alliances with the management teams of operating units. Given a choice between centralizing and decentralizing the communication function, the latter affords more regular contact with line managers, which in turn builds mutual understanding between line and staff functions.

    11. Measurement Systems

Measurement is a vital aspect of a high-performance system of strategic workplace communication, but it must be undertaken with care and skill. It is a myth that everything of importance in organizations is measured; integrity, perseverance, teamwork, agility and other essential attributes of a vital work culture all but defy measurement. The importance or value of strategic communication is not an appropriate subject for measurement; by definition, it is always and precisely the value of the strategy or the change or the goal that it supports. Nor are the tactical and mundane aspects of communication a worthwhile focus of measurement. Rather, the measurement of communication must concentrate on its effectiveness with respect to strategic direction, so as to adapt it to changing circumstances, to engage management in the essential tasks of leadership communication, to establish a basis for accountability, and to chart progress. The best measurement processes address not only formal communication but also semi-formal and informal communication. They focus on outcomes, not outputs or inputs. They measure against a progression of awareness, understanding, acceptance, and commitment, and they reflect the fundamental purpose of communication as a bridge between strategy and its successful execution.

    12. Continuous Improvement

More than just another management fad, continuous improvement is a never-ending quest for a better way. It is both a personal and professional habit, and an individual and organizational commitment, to change, progress, and growth. Without it we become stagnant, and we cease to grow. The philosophy, processes, and tools of the quality literature offer abundant means for improving strategic workplace communication, but they require a genuine receptivity to improvement. The time and resources devoted to a thoughtful, well-managed program of continuous improvement will return their investment many times over. Research into best practices should be undertaken from time to time with the understanding that each organization is unique and must ultimately find its own path to its own future. Above all, our processes must be driven by the legitimate needs of the customer, whose satisfaction is our reason for being.

The Five Myths of Managers Other Communcation Articles

There are five commonly held misconceptions about communication. These “myths” have a strong influence on how management not only view communication, but, more importantly, how they mis-manage the communication process inside their organizations.

Until these myths are exposed as false beliefs that obstruct true communication, managers will continue to repeat the same mistakes that have historically plagued organizations.

Myth 1 – Words Contain Meaning

Myth 2 – Communication and information are synonymous

Myth 3 – Communication doesn’t require much effort

    Myth 4 – Communication is a product

Myth 5 – Good speakers are good communicators

Myth 1 – Words Contain Meaning

Don’t we wish it were that simple, that every time we said a word, the same picture we have in our mind would appear in the other person’s mind. The fact that refutes this misconception about communication is that meaning resides in the minds of people. Words are merely cues or triggers that elicit meaning. All of us have our own personal meanings for words because we filter them through our varied frames of reference that originate in our widely divergent experiences and backgrounds.

I once asked a group of Canadian managers what came into their minds when I said “dog,” People answered with pet names and obviously with the predictable answer: “cat.” Then one participant blurted out “Georgia!” Having never heard this response before, I asked him why he associated the term “dog” with a state hundreds of miles across the border. His explanation was a real eye-opener for the other managers and myself on the enormous semantic variation in our language. What the manager heard from my utterance was not the word “dog” as it is commonly pronounced in Canada. My southern dialect and his intense interest in college football created in his mind the word “dawg.” The mascot for the University of Georgia is the bulldog whose name in slang is articulated on bumper stickers and among chanting fans in the slogan “Go Dawgs.”

Managers should never be so naive as to assume that because they said or wrote the words, their employee listeners grasped the meaning of their statements. That’s why soliciting feedback is such an important communication skill for managers to learn and use in their interpersonal interactions.

Myth 2 – Communication and information are synonymous

Information is not the same as communication and communication is not the same as information. Many managers interchange the two words with little awareness of the vast semantic distance that separates them. Information is the raw product that is used in the communication process to create an output or result which is shared understanding and meaning. Information is not made meaningful to another person until it is processed. The mere act of disseminating information is not an adequate substitute for communicating.

Communication is a much more sophisticated process than transmitting or disseminating information because it seeks to produce a cognitive, and/or emotional, result and then determine how well it was achieved by acquiring feedback from the listener/receiver. Therefore, the feedback channel is an essential component of the communication process. In other words, “if it hasn’t got feedback, it isn’t communication.”

Myth 3 – Communication doesn’t require much effort

Poor, inaccurate, or ineffective communication don’t require much effort. To truly communicate one must make a commitment to invest time, energy, attention and, above all, let go of some “self” in the interest of sharing understanding and meaning with another individual. As Stephen Covey states, “seek first to understand then to be understood.” Communication between people who value their relationship is not a competitive sport where someone wins and someone loses. I like to think of communication as something you do with someone for the mutual benefit of both parties, rather than for the benefit of one.

The way in which managers communicate can make employees feel supported and affirmed or it can make them feel defensive and unappreciated. Think about this for a moment: “The act of communicating is communication.” Managers can become so focused on the message or content in a communication that they lose sight of the importance of the method by which they are interacting. Managers should never underestimate the powerful effect affirming communication skills have on employees’ attitudes, which can cultivate a climate of supportiveness in the organization.

    Myth 4 – Communication is a product

Some managers view communication as a physical commodity like products manufactured on an assembly line. This pervasive false perception is perhaps the biggest impediment to improving communication in most organizations. Managers tend to be easily misled by what they see communication professionals “producing” in the form of publications and electronic media. They see these communication products as “the communications” in the company. Notice that when the term “communication” is made plural it automatically becomes a noun. And we all know that nouns describe things made of matter like newsletters, magazines, videos and this article.

What happens, if no one tells them differently, is that managers begin believing that when the message has been sent, in one of these communication vehicles, communication has occurred. How many times have you heard a manager say “let’s get the word out” when giving the command to communicate? In this case “the word” represents the message produced in printed or audio visual formats that will appear in the corporate media.

One small, but very big, way we can stop perpetuating the “communication is a product” myth is by changing the corporate vernacular. By creating new terminology about communication that reduces management’s over-reliance on making media and increases talk about improving the communication process, we can signal that our role and theirs need some upgrading. For example, the next time someone asks you what you do in your department, instead of saying “we publish the company newspaper” or “we produce the corporate videos” consider saying “we help management ensure that the communication process is working in the company.” The more managers come to realize that communication is a process that is either working or not, the more likely they will see themselves as managers of that process.

Myth 5 – Good speakers are good communicators

From birth we are taught to talk. Our early “communication training” in school through to our formal training is almost totally focused on teaching us how to create and send messages, not receive them. Is it any wonder that when we become adults and enter the workplace where we must interact with others, we find ourselves asking why so many misunderstandings occur? Why are working relationships so weak? And why is getting work done through others more difficult than it should be?

Managers who are effective communicators and good listeners make good leaders. The reason listening is such a powerful communication skill is because it produces double dividends. It not only increases a manager’s chances of accurately understanding what employees are saying, it also builds positive relationships with them. When managers listen to their employees they demonstrate their respect for them and their ideas.

Good listeners aren’t born. Listening skills can be taught. One simple way managers can begin to be better listeners is by starting to give more verbal feedback to employees. Managers should paraphrase in their own words what they hear employees saying and then ask if their interpretations are accurate. Again, it’s the observable act of listening that strengthens the manager/employee relationship.

  • Corporate Identity (CI) : 1 (1999)

    Corporate Idnetity (CI) : 1

우리나라의 CI(Corporate Identity) 프로그램은 한마디로 VI(Visual Idnetity)작업의 한계를 벗어나지 못하고 있습니다.

“What does the hell Norvatis mean?”

    BRITISH AIRWAYS UNVEILS NEW IDENTITY

British Airways, which once brought together thousands of people in the shape of a globe to create a compelling image for one of its television commercials and more recently imposed a giant model of the Concorde on Times Square, is not a company to do things by halves. So when it unveiled what management describes as “a radical new identity” in June, it was no surprise that the company’s public relations people were scattering superlatives like confetti.

According to BA, the company’s new identity was “based on what is believed to be the largest consumer research exercise in the history of the travel industry.” It was introduced through “what is believed to be the world’s largest satellite corporate television broadcast” using 13 satellites, transmitting pictures from almost 25 different places to 126 locations in 63 countries across five continents.

BA may also be able to claim a record for the most corporate identities unveiled at one time by one company. The airline has abandoned the Union Flag that has appeared on the airline’s tailfin since it was founded and is in the process of replacing it with 50 “world images” designed by painters, potters, weavers, ceramicists, paper-cut artists, calligraphers, and sculptors from around the world. The images – 13 of which were unveiled in June – were created by artists from New York to Mpumalanga (eastern South Africa) to Warsaw to the Kalahari Desert.

The airline says it conducted extensive interviews with its passengers, 60 percent of whom originate from outside its domestic market. According to CEO Bob Ayling, “Some people abroad saw the airline as staid, conservative and a little cold” – characteristics that have, on occasion, been used to describe Britain as a whole. The company concluded that it needed to be seen as more modern, dynamic, and responsive to the different cultural needs of its customers.

“We need a corporate identity that will enable us to become not just a U.K. carrier but a global airline that is based in Britain,” says Ayling. “The identity we unveiled is that of a global, caring company, more modern, more open, more cosmopolitan, but proud to be based in Britain.”

The design project was supervised by Newell & Sorrell, an identity and design consultancy headquartered in London and Amsterdam. The firm worked with BA for close to two years, and chairman John Sorrell says its work for the airline was “among the most challenging, exciting and innovative… we have ever undertaken.” In addition to finding the art that now adorns the BA fleet, Newell & Sorrell changed the airline’s color palette, ditching the old pearl gray, dark red, and dark (almost black) blue for the red, white, and blue of the Union Flag. Finally, the typeface for the airline’s name was changed to be softer.

The launch broadcast was viewed by 14,000 employees and guests and was accompanied by an impressive array of special events. In Thailand, a flotilla of traditional barges with sails designed to reflect the company’s new imagery sailed up the Chao Phraya River while in Hong Kong, a dragon dance gave a traditional good luck welcome to the new identity before it was unveiled. At London’s Heathrow, meanwhile, Ayling unveiled two planes: one bearing an image from the Ndbele tribe in South Africa, the other adorned with Japanese calligraphy.

In the U.K., at least, reaction to the new identity was mixed. The director of the U.K’s Contemporary Art Society suggested that some of the designs – notably a tartan pattern for Scotland – were patronizing while “the whole of Germany is summed up with something that looks like a linoleum kitchen floor.” Others questioned the strategy of presenting 50 different images. “Some individual designs are attractive and striking… others seem to be pretty corny,” commented David Barrie, director of the National Art Collections Fund.

Says Ayling, “It is not just that the world is getting smaller, which it is. It is not just that technology is changing the way people communicate, though that has something to do with it. And it’s not just that the competition is getting tougher, which certainly has a part to play. What really has changed is the expectations of our customers.”

BA says the new identity program is part of a sweeping corporate and cultural change at the airline, which began with the upgrading of First, Club World, and Club Europe class travel and will continue with new products and services for leisure and business travelers. The airline will invest more than $10 billion over the next three years, improving its terminal at JFK in New York, providing better in-flight entertainment, adding new routes, offering online reservations, and expanding its relationship with alliance partners like American Airlines.

A new advertising campaign will support the new look. The first ad in the new campaign, from London’s M&C Saatchi, uses international music – instruments range from a Greek bouzouki to a Moroccan snake charmer to a sitar – arranged by Dave Stewart, formerly of the pop group the Eurythmics. The ads focus on the diversity of the world’s geography and on emotions that are experienced by all people regardless of geography, with a voice-over that states, “The more you travel, the more you realize the world is closer than you think.”

    Creating A Name For Novartis

    Organization: Novartis

    Agency: Ruder Finn

    ——————————————————————————–

    OBJECTIVES & AUDIENCE

Ruder Finn and Novartis created a global advertising campaign to build awareness for a brand new company with a distinctive name, and to position that company as a leader in the emerging field of Life Sciences.

When Ciba and Sandoz merged in 1996, the company chose the name Novartis which, from the Latin “novae artes,” means “new skills.” The new skills Novartis offered would enhance life through pharmaceutical, nutritional and agricultural science, thereby making Novartis the leading Life Sciences company in the world.

The objectives of the advertising campaign were two-fold:

To establish name recognition of the newly formed company on a worldwide scale.

To define what a “Life Sciences” company was and to position Novartis as the leading company in this emerging field.

This campaign would focus primarily on key stakeholders in the financial world, the professional world, the media, government, and policy makers and opinion leaders throughout the world.

    STRATEGY

To foster a dialogue about Novartis and the meaning of a Life Sciences company, the campaign featured the Socratic method of asking questions that lead to answers. Each advertisement posed a question pertaining to a new innovation within one of the three sectors of Life Sciences: pharmaceutical, nutrition, or agricultural science. For example, readers were asked “Who’s developing new therapies to make organ transplants more successful?,’ and “Who’s finding new ways to feed those who physically cannot feed themselves?” The answer to every question was Novartis. These questions were placed on a background of an electron microscopic photograph of DNA, the building block of life. To emphasize the company’s focus on new approaches, as well as to underscore the meaning of “Novartis,” the tag line for the campaign became “New Skills in the Science of Life.”

The fact that this campaign was a global initiative created a special challenge when we began to define the new field of Life Science in countries around the world. Every advertisement was translated to maintain intended meaning and impact across a wide range of cultures. Additionally, a visual branding at the bottom of the ads always identified “Life Sciences” as the combination of healthcare, agribusiness and nutrition through the use of icons for each of these business sectors. Advertising guidelines and templates on CD-ROM were distributed worldwide to ensure that advertising in every county remained consistent, despite the vast number of different ads that ran.

    EXECUTION

Our objectives to create recognition of the Novartis name as well as to define the field of Life Sciences were achieved by creating a global advertising campaign based upon simple words, images and bold colors which could be identified across cultural barriers.

Ruder Finn handled every facet of the creative program of this campaign. All ideas, copy, photographs, and layouts were executed by Ruder Finn.

To gain the attention of the key stakeholders in our target audience, the print ads ran in high-impact publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, Forbes, and Fortune. Placement in these international publications was complemented with local print advertising in key countries (Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA). Overall, the print advertisements were created in seven different languages and placed in several hundred publications.

To further reach key stakeholders, airport posters were placed in key international cities including: Basel, Brussels, Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, Washington DC, and Zurich.

Television ads were also directed towards financial leaders and were placed on the Asian Business Network, the BBC, CNN, CNBC, the European Business Network, and MSNBC.

    RESULTS

Extensive research was conducted to evaluate the global effectiveness of this campaign. Before the start of the campaign, in November1996, a preliminary survey was conducted in the eight countries (Germany, France, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, the UK, and the USA) upon which the campaign would focus. With the exception of Switzerland, where the company is based, the overall awareness of the name Novartis and what field in which the company was involved, was below twenty percent among stakeholders.

After the initial ten months of the campaign, in October 1997, the same study was again conducted within the eight key countries. Besides Switzerland, where awareness of the company was already high, the overall awareness of the name Novartis and the company’s business pursuits was at least double pre-campaign levels. In Italy, Japan and the UK awareness rose almost one and a half times the original level, and in the United States awareness of Novartis tripled (see attached chart).

In the short span of ten months, the Novartis advertising campaign has started to produce the desired effect of raising key stakeholder awareness on a global level

Employee Communication(EC)

특히 근래에 들어서는 기업의 전략적 변화(Restructuring, Reengineering, Downsizing, Out-sourcing, M&A,etc.)

Corporate Change

Mission?

EC는 사원들을 잘 짜여진 기업의 Infra(저 번에 말씀드린 기업의 제반 기초 요소들- Mission, Vision, Value, Leadership)를 기준으로 하나하나 정렬 시키는 역할을 합니다.

    Internal Communications

Corporate communications is about aligning goals and programs to address – in measurable ways – the priorities of business. The results of a recent “best practice” analysis from among 259 major US corporations showed that employee communications is the #1 issue for communication leaders. Here are highlights of 8 key areas critical to maintaining a future stake in your organizations growth:

    1. Business Learning

An environment where people learn the business, understand the financial goals and regularly track progress against those goals. People believe their job is to improve performance and are given a stake in the outcome. Set the context of corporate messages by:

    bringing the outside market into the workplace;

    teaching employees how the organization makes money;

linking people and what they do to the business strategy.

    2. Leadership Communication

Leadership behavior and CEO support have greater impact on communications effectiveness than formal communications media such as newsletters and memos. Consistent messaging allows leadership to reinforce the operational and behavioral implications of an organization’s mission – on an ongoing basis.

    implement strategy with accountable objectives

leadership communication should be at all levels

    managerial communication training is important

    3. Involvement

Engaging employees in the corporate mission ultimately boils down to enabling them to make correct decisions in a way that optimize the performance of the organization overall. Self-directed teams represent one of the deepest levels of employee involvement. Informed employees who know the corporate mission, and understand the business and its priorities will make better decisions than employed people in a traditional hierarchical structure.

    4. Technology

Best Practice Companies acknowledge that technology is great for moving operating information quickly and cheaply. At the same time, organizations of people must interact on a personal level for there to be meaningful understanding.

    5. Recognition & Celebration

Fulfillment through achievements and recognition for individual and collective accomplishments can be viewed as another process for consistent messaging. Four elements to effective recognition programs:

    clear understanding of business objectives

employees raise their performance with goals

employees sense achievement when they meet goals

    the organization provides meaningful recognition

    6. Measurement

Communications departments are able to show impact on business and operating results when plans and objectives flow out of business plans.

    define ultimate customer experience

identify employee behaviors needed to achieve this

train/engage employees to live these behaviors

measure effect on customer satisfaction and loyalty

    correlate satisfaction with financial performance

    7. Operations Alignment

Actions speak louder than words…and conflict between actions and words can derail or at least slow the achievement goals. Align communication of business objectives and plans with corporate messages.

    8. The Communications Function

How does the function support the business operations and structure, and what does it cost? Towers and Perrin suggest these four steps:

set clear objectives tied to business strategy

gather information critical to objectives and strategy

    establish a focus

build and implement the resulting strategy

  • Public Relations Overview 7 (1999)

    Public Relations Overview 7

    Public Relations Overview 6

    ‘ONE CLEAR VOICE”

  • Public Relation Overview 1 (1999)

    Public Relation Overview 1

    MEDIA RELATIONS

    INVESTOR RELATIONS

    CHANGE MANAGEMENT

    MEDIA COUNSELING/ STRATEGIC MEDIA CONSULTATION

    SPEECH COMMUNICATIONS

    PRESENTATION TRAINING

    MEDIA TRAINING

    CRIRIS MANAGEMENT/ COMMUNICATIONS/RISK MANAGEMENT

    EMPLOYEE COMMUNICATIONS

    CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS

    REPUTATION MANAGEMENT

    GOVERNMENT RELATIONS

    LOBBY

    COMMUNITY RELATIONS

    PUBLIC AFFAIRS

    EVENT MANAGEMENT

    MARKETING COMMUNICATIONS

    MARKET RESEARCH

    PRODUCT/SERVICE PROMOTION

    PUBLISHING

    PROFESSIONAL WRITING

    CORPORATE IDENTITY MANAGEMENT

    BRAND IDENTITY MANAGEMENT

BE MORE SERIOUS.. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN EXPRESS YOUR SINCERITY.
