Lucent Branding Success in Latin America – An Integrated Approach

Lucent Technologies

SILVER ANVIL AWARDS ’99 – Category 10, Global Communications

————————————————————-

OVERVIEW

Lucent Technologies was born of the trivestiture of AT&T announced in 1995. In 1996, the name of the new systems and technology company was announced and the company, Lucent Technologies, had its initial public offering (IPO) in April of 1996. In Latin America, where even AT&T was a newcomer and had low brand awareness, the creation and launch of Lucent was met with some confusion among target audiences – was Lucent a subsidiary of AT&T or an independent company? Where did Bell Labs, Lucent’s R&D division, fit in? Also impacting awareness of the Lucent brand was the multiplicity of business units of this large communications networking company. By the end of 1997, some audiences knew Lucent as a network systems provider, others as a provider of equipment for the business enterprise, and yet others as a consumer phones manufacturer. Although Lucent had made significant progress since 1996 in getting its brand known in the US, it was clear that awareness of the Lucent brand among target audiences in Latin America was still quite low at the end of 1997. In a concerted effort to integrate all external communication initiatives to significantly impact brand awareness, the Lucent public relations and marketing teams for the Latin America region decided to form a Regional Brand Council and similar councils in Brazil and Mexico. These would later be extended to other countries in the region. Following is an outline of how this effort managed to bring about an increase in the Lucent brand awareness in Mexico and Brazil to levels nearing or equal to those of Lucent brand awareness in the United States. The challenge was to sharply raise brand awareness within a limited budget that was a fraction of what our major competitors were investing in advertising and public relations.

RESEARCH

Various forms of research, both formal and informal, were conducted to identify the problem in 1997. First, it was clear from informal surveys of the sales and customer teams that they were encountering significant challenges in the marketplace as a result of low recognition of Lucent’s name and scope of business. Additionally, analysis of media coverage demonstrated that Lucent was still often identified as a subsidiary of AT&T and not as an independent company. Bell Labs also was identified as a separate entity, often with greater recognition than Lucent, and not as the research and development division of the company. A review of business unit customer communication efforts also revealed that different business units were trying to brand themselves as independent units, rather than maintaining the corporate identity.

Formal research: Lucent participated in an omnibus study in Mexico in July of 1997 that showed a low of 10 percent for unaided brand awareness of the company name, and only 42 percent of aided awareness. A primary research study commissioned by Lucent in May of 1998, showed little increase among the business enterprise segment: 12 percent for unaided brand awareness and 57 percent for aided awareness. In Brazil, a primary research study commissioned by Lucent in November 1997 demonstrated that among the telecommunications service provider segment, only 12 percent mentioned the name Lucent when asked about telecom equipment providers, while 82 percent recognized the name when mentioned. Among business enterprise executives, the results were lower: 10 percent unaided awareness and 38 percent aided awareness of Lucent. Research conducted at the end of 1998 showed a dramatic improvement.

PLANNING

In the Fall of 1997, Lucent’s marketing teams identified the urgent need to rapidly raise Lucent’s brand awareness in our two top markets in Latin America: Brazil and Mexico. In response to this urgent need, Lucent’s public relations team decided to form a Regional Brand Council and implement the same concept in Brazil and Mexico as the trial markets. These markets were selected because they are the largest revenue markets for Lucent in the region. The primary objective for the Brand Councils was to provide leadership across all business units to guide and integrate all communications and branding efforts in accordance to the Lucent global brand position.

It was also decided to make the Brand Council responsible for integrating all communications for maximum impact and results, as well as to resolve cross-business unit conflicts. The Regional Public Relations Vice President would serve as Chair of the Regional Brand Council, and the Public Relations Director in each market would lead the country Brand Council.

Membership in the Brand Councils included all business unit leaders and marketing directors, the public relations staff (media relations, events manager, and employee information), the corporate advertising team, public affairs/government relations, and human resources managers.

Objectives: (1) Raise brand awareness in Latin America to U.S. levels in 1997 by the end of the year 2000 by integrating all communication efforts. (2) Secure the active participation and cooperation of all business units to present one Lucent brand to the market.

STRONG Strategies: Brand Councils would be responsible for developing a plan of action that would include institutional advertising efforts, aggressive media relations, special events and trade shows, executive speaking engagements, customer events, consultants/analysts program, internal communications, employment advertising and philanthropy efforts.

EXECUTION

While this summary cannot include all initiatives undertaken, following is an outline of key efforts:

Brand Councils: The brand councils began monthly meetings in January of 1998 to make joint decisions on all communication initiative, thus leveraging and integrating the resources of all business units. Meetings last 3-4 hours depending on the order of business. Participation increased steadily throughout the year and the CALA Brand Council is now seen as a model for the rest of the company.

Media Relations: An aggressive media relations effort increased the quantity and quality of coverage significantly. A Global Media Event at corporate headquarters in New Jersey, attended by five key reporters from each target country, generated prominent features in top media. Media coverage doubled in Mexico and Brazil from levels at the beginning of the year.

Trade Shows/Events: Lucent participated in major trade shows such as ExpoComm. in Mexico and Brazil, and Telexpo in Brazil, with keynote speaking positions featuring a corporate executive and prime booth location. A survey of visitors to the Lucent booth at ExpoComm Brazil showed that 79 percent of those interviewed said they were more likely to do business with Lucent after visiting the show. In ExpoComm Mexico, Lucent won the first prize for the best booth. Messages for booth sinage, speeches, advertising and media relations were integrated by the Brand Council. In Mexico, an impressive Bell Labs Seminar was held in October of 1998.

Advertising: An institutional brand advertising campaign was implemented in Mexico and Brazil, with the “Credentials” campaign as the centerpiece. This campaign was fully managed by the Brand Council, and all business unit and employment recruitment ads also were integrated through the brand council.

Consultants/analysts: Quarterly meetings and technology presentations were launched in Mexico and Brazil for this important audience.

Internal communications: A CALA (Caribbean and Latin America) website was launched to present new information almost daily to region employees. Town Meetings were held in Mexico and Brazil with the regional President and CEO, as well as corporate executives such as COO or Group Presidents.

Philanthropy: An annual Day of Caring program was instituted in each country to encourage employees to volunteer for a specific cause. In Mexico, employees planted trees to rebuild a popular forest (“Desierto de los Leones”) recently devastated by fire and provided an outing for children from a nearby orphanage. In Brazil, employees from six different cities helped eight institutions – from orphanages and inner city schools to an association for the elderly blind.

EVALUATION

Brazil – Unaided brand awareness among service providers almost tripled in Brazil from 12 percent in Nov. 1997 to 34 percent in Nov. 1998; aided awareness grew from 82 to 95 percent (which is almost universal awareness). In the business enterprise segment it doubled from 10 to 22 percent unaided awareness, and aided awareness increased from 38 to 71 percent.

Mexico – Among service providers, unaided awareness levels reached a high of 69 percent and aided awareness was 95 percent in Nov. 1998. Unaided awareness in the business enterprise jumped from 12 to 23 percent, and total awareness in this segment increased from 57 to 79 percent. By comparison, US levels of awareness in 1997 were 38 percent unaided and 96 percent aided among service providers and 34 percent unaided and 89 percent aided among large enterprises. These results were noteworthy considering they were accomplished with limited budget resources and are largely attributed to the efforts of the Brand Councils to integrate all external communication efforts.

Community Relations (2000)

Community Relations

Cause-related marketing :

Sponsorship:

The Power of Corporate Kinetics

Goodwill = 사랑

Corporate Identity =

Corporate Image =

Media Relations =

Corporate Reputation =

Crisis Management =

Issue Management =

Corporate Philanthropy =

Corporate Citizenship =

Business로서의 PR/ Industry로서의 PR界 < ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

Media Relations

Crisis Communications

Investor Relations

Public Affairs

Government Relations

Event/Promotions

Employee Communications

Marketing Commuications

Reputation Management

(예,MR/CC/PA/GR전문 에이젼시)

Media Relations

Crisis Communications

Investor Relations

Public Affairs

Government Relations

Event/Promotions

Employee Communications

Marketing Commuications

Reputation Management

알려주세요 < ?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

PR Tips for the Start-Up: How to Get the Word out on Your New Company

By Maria Murnane

You have a great product, but no one knows what it is. You have a great Web site, but no one knows that it’s there. You have some happy customers, but no one knows who they are.

What do you do?

If you’re smart, you’ll implement a focused, strategic public relations campaign to start building some awareness about your company. It’s not hard;and it’s not expensive. If you can work it into your budget, hiring an agency is probably the best option. If not, here are basics to get you started on your own:

1) Develop a target media list

Think about where you want to be. What magazines (print and online) do your potential customers read? What do potential business partners read? To what TV/radio shows do they tune in? Write these down in order of importance. Then call each organization and get the contact information for the person who would be most interested in your product. Set up a mailing list for product reviews, and develop a quick e-mail list for sending out company announcements.

2) Create some basic press materials

Once you generate media interest in your company, you must be prepared to send out some information immediately, either in paper form or electronically. Put together a folder with some basic information explaining who you are and what you do. Most press kits include press releases, company backgrounders, bios and headshots of the executives, products shots, etc. (Note;high school yearbook photos are not recommended.)

Keep the writing short, and leave out the technical jargon. Write your materials as if the person reading them were not familiar with your industry. While your initial point of contact maybe be tech-savvy, you never know who might eventually be assigned to write something about your company;don’t assume he or she has a degree in engineering or computer science or Web design.

Put all press material on your Web site for easy access.

3) Leverage the power of search engines

Register your Web site with all major search engines to drive traffic to your site (e.g. Yahoo!, Lycos, Excite). Develop an extensive list of key words that have to do with your business and enter all of them.

4) Conduct editorial research

Most magazines plan their coverage a year ahead of time, so call each publication on your target list and ask them to send you an editorial calendar. Many of these are also available online at each magazine’s Web site. Look through the calendars and see if any of the scheduled articles have anything to do with your business. If so, contact the editor in charge of the story and tell him/her why your company would be a good fit for the article.

5) Befriend freelancers

Freelancers can be a PR person’s best friend. They are always looking for good story ideas, and they have solid relationships with multiple publications. Identify freelancers in your area who write for your target publications, and invite them out to lunch. If they don’t live near you, call them up and strike up a conversation. E-mail them jokes. If they’re good at what they do they’ll be happy to hear from you and will listen to what you have to say. Freelancers know the editors and will pitch your features ideas directly to them, which is much nicer than having to cold-call the editors yourself.

6) Go on a press/analyst tour

Most industry journalists and analysts will be willing to meet with you to hear about your business because it’s their job to know what’s going on in the industry they cover. And if you’re willing to fly across the country to see them, they can usually find a half-hour in their schedule for the meeting. Make a few calls and set up some appointments;it’s not as hard as it sounds. You might not get immediate coverage as a result, but you’ll develop relationships that will benefit you over time.

7) Attend key industry trade shows

Even if you can’t afford a booth, be sure to attend your industry’s top trade show(s). Most of the journalists on your media list will probably be there. Call them ahead of time and invite them for a drink while at the show. Ask them their opinions on the state of the industry and how your company fits into it. Just like a press tour, this type of contact will help you develop solid relationships that are critical for an effective PR program. Your presence will help the media begin to see you as a credible player in the industry and pay more attention to any announcements you make.

8) Document your customer success stories

Do your customers love your product? Are they happy with your service? Get them to say so on the record. The press loves to interview satisfied customers, and you’d be surprised at how many companies don’t have any customer names on hand to offer reporters. Keep an updated list of customers for the media to contact.

9) Position yourself as an industry expert

If you want people to think you’re a leader in your industry, get out there and lead. Submit interesting articles to your target publications about the future of your industry (and put color reprint of any articles you author in your press kit). Offer to speak at key trade shows and conferences. Participate in roundtable panels and industry events. Write letters to the editor of your target publications commenting on previous articles. Establish a presence in the industry by contributing unique opinions and an expertise that is valued by your peers and the media.

Following these basic steps won’t get you a feature story in USA Today , but it will probably generate a lot more results than you’d get blowing your entire marketing budget on paid advertising. If you’re focused about what you want to accomplish, a home-grown PR plan can get you rolling down the road toward early retirement.

Your CEO … The Best Way to Project a Company’s Brand Franchise

By: G.A. “Andy” Marken

In the rush of the dotcom world, startups struggle desperately for eyeballs and a real or imagined reason for existence. Flush with millions of other people’s money and no positive cashflow in sight they move rapidly to establish mindshare in an industry that changes on a daily basis.

To quickly sell their intangible benefits, many borrow recognition and credibility by hiring William Shatner, Whoopi Goldberg and other spokespersons. Others like Amazon.com, eBay, Yahoo! and AOL take a different path. They leverage their key asset, their CEOs, to build unique stars people can identify with and trust.

When the final tabulations are made, individuals and companies will vote with their checkbooks. At that time we feel the winners will clearly be Jeff Bezos (Amazon), Meg Whitman (eBay), Tim Koogle (Yahoo!) and Steve Chase (AOL).

Properly positioned, properly trained and properly used the company’s CEO is the organization’s most powerful marketing asset. He or she, better than anyone else, can establish the company’s market position and project the organization’s brand franchise and charter for existence.

Historically we, and other PR professionals, have taken minor and major issues and developed them into position statements for clients. We’ve done the research and legwork to develop opportunities for company executives to speak with reporters and before audiences. We’ve briefed the press. And we’ve briefed CEOs on questions they can expect and potential responses. In other words, media training for them has been casual.

The Surprise Question

Earlier this year (1999), the inadequacy of this approach was brought home. We had garnered an interview slot for the company president on one of the growing number of TV shows that cover computer, communications and entertainment technology. The host and crew went through a number of dry runs with our boss to make him more comfortable and more expressive in front of the camera. A typical, thoughtful president of a computer industry company; our CEO found it tough to get “excited” about the technology and product he had helped nurture for more than three years.

When they were satisfied with his on-camera comfort and still subdued enthusiasm, they did their final take. Everything went smoothly during the five-minute interview…until the closing question. The host asked a totally new question regarding competitive products. Having done live and taped TV shows for a number of years I immediately saw the surprise in our CEO’s eyes and beads of sweat form on his upper lip. Despite being caught off guard, our man did a decent job of recovering and answering the question.

Leveling the Playing Field

Immediately after the taping we did a post mortum. He knew that the volume of such interviews was going to increase and that we couldn’t deflect or protect him from every query. He understood that questions were going to come out of left field and he had to learn how to turn even antagonistic encounters to his advantage.

He agreed that if he was going to be the effective company spokesperson he had to learn how to develop and present the soundbytes that reporters and interviewers hunt for to produce lively copy and interviews. Simply stating the facts and sticking to a script wasn’t an option. We arranged for him to interview three different media training organizations. On his own time, and at his own expense, he got the training he needed to be effective with the media.

Like most CEOs he still prefers the well-scripted and “friendly” product and market-focused interviews. We find that we no longer have to redirect or deflect/reshape many of the questions. Instead we can see that he can almost visualize the story as it will appear and is able to make his points and inject his soundbytes at just the right time.

He’s more comfortable. He’s more effective. And increasingly the reporter or interviewer goes away with a good story that serves his readers, listeners or viewers. They also leave with a story that meets our corporate and marketing objectives.

The Changing CEO Role

In companies of every size the CEO is a pivotal asset. In a number of instances there is no substitute. Unfortunately most CEOs don’t acknowledge and aren’t comfortable in this role. They refuse to be responsible for one of their key corporate functions. At the same time, they hold public relations responsible for not getting their company the same level and quality of exposure as other firms in their industry.

While they hide behind engineering, manufacturing and “business” tasks they subconsciously envy the coverage others in their industry receive. Their reluctance to step from behind the curtain makes the PR job extremely difficult and at times impossible.

The Resource Challenge

The challenge for PR people today is that there is no longer time to carry out an escalating program of building brand equity for a company. It must be done quickly and it is an effort that is constantly changing. The only way to develop and nurture branding on a global scale is to use your people resources properly.

Increasingly CEOs understand that being the company spokesperson part of their job description. No one else adds reality to the message. Even if the president is publicity shy it is public relations responsibility to get management to the point where they can comfortably and effectively be the one who adds credibility to the message.

Those CEOs to seize the opportunity for their companies don’t have to be megalomaniacs. They don’t have to be egotists. They simply have to be helped to understand all of the aspects of their jobs.

Fortunately, there are some excellent examples you can point to in making your point.

Solid CEO Brands

You’ll have to excuse our leaning to the technology industries but after more than 20 years in Silicon Valley, you begin to believe everyone lives and works on the edge of disaster.

Intel

Few firms have had a series of strong leaders as has Intel. Gordon Moore became an industry legend by setting the direction and seeing the future of the semiconductor and computer industries. He passed the mantle to a very driven, outspoken and astute marketeer, Andy Grove, who made it popular to be paranoid about your business and its survival. Yes, it was Andy Grove who underestimated the impact of a few postings on the Web regarding problems with the Pentium processor but he quickly learned how to use the Internet to the company’s advantage. Much less combative and more thoughtful, Craig Barrett has taken the helm and is developing his own image as a strategic technology leader.

AT&T

Following the breakup of MaBell, AT&T languished for years inventing great technology but protecting its long-distance goldmine while the best people left to build the data industry. Mike Armstrong stepped into the bloated and rudderless organization and like Patton instantly took command reshaping and redirecting the company in less than a year. No one will yet claim that AT&T is a lean, mean fighting machine. But the charismatic motorcycle-riding grandfather has moved the 3-minute phone call company into the mainstream of the Internet infrastructure marketplace. When he stands before a crowd and says AT&T will be the leader in voice, video and data convergence for the home and business…you take it as fact.

IBM

Hundreds if not thousands of people in the industry thought IBM’s board had lost its collective mind when Lou Gerstner was plucked from American Express to head the bleeding dinosaur. The competition was relieved the credit card guy had taken on the job of burying Big Blue. Rather than planning the wake; the tough, fast learner put the dinosaur on a rigid diet and forced it to adapt to its new surroundings. Today, he walks the walk and talks the talk of the Internet and when he says his is the leading Internet service provider company…Wall Street and companies large and small take note.

Oracle

People describe Larry Ellison with words like iconoclast, visionary, chameleon and survivor. But the street-wise head of the world’s leading data base software company has strong images of tomorrow and equally strong statements regarding his competitors. Whether he is flying his French fighter jet, sailing in a race or promoting his idea of tomorrow’s television service; he makes it clear to the press, competition and organization that success is with his and his company’s grasp. You don’t always believe him but you’re just as certain nothing will stand in his way.

HP

The change that has taken place since Carly Florina took over the revered instrumentation and computer company is phenomenal. After being seduced away from Lucent the AT&T lodestone that became a global success when it set out on its own she has been one of the most vocal and visible spokespersons for ecommerce. Her directions, words and actions have put a burning fire in the guts of employees. A cheerleader and coach she has made people believe inside and outside the company that the company will be a global commerce leader in the 21st century.

Amazon

Every dotcom entrepreneur wants to be like Jeff Bezos when they grow up. His click and order company first took on traditional brick and mortar bookstores and despite a phenomenal IPO few people felt it would survive when Barnes and Noble set its sites on the on-line upstart. Bezos, despite the fact that his company continues to show red on its bottom line, has expanded the company into on-line CD sales, auctions and other business ventures turning it into what could be called a virtual everyman’s shopping mall. He’s got lots of detractors inside and outside the industry as well as on Wall Street. But he makes himself very available to the media and is always ready to answer the easy, hard and antagonistic question.

Sun Micro and Cisco Systems

Even though you can’t group the two firms in the same category Scott McNeally and John Chambers are very similar. McNeally aggressively promoted one common theme and direction for Sun the network is the computer. Recently he and his team have shifted the company’s focus to the Internet and proclaim that they put the dot in dotcom. Chambers for years quietly promoted Cisco as the network infrastructure company. He made an easy transition to the Internet infrastructure company and most recently the spokesman for enabling e-commerce. Both men are strong-willed and even tempered. They are also very adamant in their beliefs and aggressively protect their company’s image and direction. Deeply involved in running their organizations, they also realize that one of their primary jobs is also to be the primary spokesperson for their companies inside and outside the firms.

Chrysler

As a change of pace, recall the PR activities Lee Iacocca carried out when he left his Mustang behind and took on the task of reviving and revitalizing Chrysler…the company and the brand. Despite his many years at Ford, he became Chrysler to Congress, the battle-weary employees, the media and car buyers around the world. While he earned millions in stock options, he set a new standard for CEOs who took over troubled companies including Steve Jobs at Apple of an annual salary of $l. Iacocca accepted the role of Chrysler spokesperson and quickly became the most visible company president in the automotive industry.

There are hundreds of other CEOs you could cite around the globe in large companies and small who have become the brand identities for their firm. They have positions. They have opinions. They have visions of the role their companies will play in tomorrow’s marketplace.

So does your CEO. It is public relations challenge to help the company president get the message to the media. If he or she doesn’t look beyond quarterly results or the next new product, move on. Find a company and a CEO who is equal to tomorrow’s uncertainties and challenges.

GM(Genetically Modified), Monsanto, B&M, Y2K,… (1999)

GM(Genetically Modified), Monsanto, B&M, Y2K,…
